The Hon. Jenny Macklin MP opens our Family Units!

On Wednesday 19 October, the Odyssey House Family Units were officially opened by the Honourable Jenny Macklin MP, Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

“Odyssey House will now be able to assist more local families by helping parents get back on track and by keeping families together,’ said Ms Macklin.

“We all know the terrible cost that drug and alcohol addiction can have on families – that’s why it’s important that Governments and the community more broadly get behind the work done by great organisations like Odyssey House.

“These new facilities were specifically designed so that parents can live on site with their children while they receive help through the programs at Odyssey House’.

Passion for Food and Life

Residents at Odyssey House Victoria have the opportunity to gain accredited training and practical experience in areas such as hospitality and business administration as part of their rehabilitation. Chef Trainer, Kevin Cooke, talks about the hospitality training program.

At Odyssey House Victoria’s Residential Rehabilitation program in Lower Plenty, we offer a Certificate II in Hospitality (kitchen operations) to residents who work in the kitchen. We currently have six residents enrolled.

For each Unit completed, a Certificate of Recognition is issued. This can be credited towards Cert II/III if they wish to continue studying Hospitality at a later date.

As the length of time the trainee might be with us is unknown, I like to try and make sure they at least obtain basic hygiene and knife skills. In industry, it is hard for any kitchen to spend time teaching these, so it will be an advantage when it comes to looking for employment if they can use a knife correctly and safely, and know about food safety programs and how they relate to industry or even their home.
